Los Angeles LGBT Center's Vanguard Awards

Amini Fonua, 26, is a two-time Olympic swimmer who was also the flag bearer for the conservative island nation of Tonga at the 2012 London Games. He was an openly gay top swimmer at conservative Texas A&M University and came out to the world in a powerful opinion piece published in 2013. That’s the same year he participated in our Beach Volleyball Classic fundraiser as a celebrity spokesperson—promoting awareness and support for the event and helping us raise tens of thousands of dollars—while also competing as a swimmer and volleyball player. The Center welcomes Amini to the Vanguard Awards as an honoree and longtime supporter.
